» Background:
Doumeki grew up in a Shinto shrine, raised by his grandfather, the shrine’s abbot. There is never any mention of his parents, but he speaks of his grandfather often and has gained almost all of his knowledge of the occult exclusively from him. Though his grandfather has passed away, he continues to live in the shrine.
When he was young, Doumeki was a weak child. In order to teach him to be strong, his grandfather made him dress in a girls’ kimono, as was the tradition. The trick wore off, it seemed, because in high school Doumeki became very popular with girls, was in the kyoto (archery) club at his school (along with a few others), and did well in sports – coming in at the top during competitions.
Doumeki’s most prominent role from the off centered around Watanuki. At first, Doumeki and Watanuki spent very little time with each other, though Watanuki seemed to harbor an intense dislike for him from the beginning. However, at Yuuko’s bidding, Watanuki and Doumeki were pushed together more and more often, and soon enough it was revealed (by Yuuko) that Doumeki had the ability to exorcise ghosts using a bow and arrows made of spiritual energy. This ability ran in his family, as his grandfather Doumeki Haruka was also an exorcist. Though he couldn’t see these spirits, Doumeki himself also served as a ward for ghosts, and because of this Yuuko urged Watanuki to make friends with him, because he could help keep the ghosts from crowding around Watanuki as they usually did.
From the off, Doumeki never hesitated to help Watanuki in any situation. From catching him when he fell off a roof trying to dispel an evil spirit brought forth by a game called Angel-san, to standing ten hours in the rain holding a ribbon to lure Watanuki out of a dark place underneath a hydrangea, Doumeki watched out for Watanuki and interfered whenever necessary to protect him. At one point in time, he made a choice and tried to exorcise a ghost lady friend of Watanuki’s (much to Watanuki’s anger) who was making Watanuki sick, and afterward, he was relieved when Watanuki forgave him.
Later, after Watanuki incurred a grudge from a spider after accidentally destroying its web, because Doumeki helped extract Watanuki’s hand from the web the grudge was passed to him, and he couldn’t open his right eye. Watanuki wished for Doumeki’s sight to return, and as payment was forced to give up his right eye instead. Angry with this result, Doumeki searched endlessly in the library at the temple to find a way to relieve the curse, but was left empty-handed. In the end, Doumeki requested to Yuuko to give Watanuki half of his right eye, and Yuuko granted his request. From this, Doumeki started to see things Watanuki was seeing – ghosts and spirits, mainly.
It became apparent that a friend of theirs, Kunogi Himawari, was bad luck, when numerous suspicious incidents accumulated, and after touching Watanuki on the second story floor of the school, Watanuki fell through a window, injuring himself horribly. Doumeki saw the fall, and rushed Watanuki to Yuuko’s shop. Until then, Doumeki could not enter the shop, because he didn’t need to – having no wish (or other need). But at that moment, Doumeki was allowed in, if only to make the wish (along with Himawari) to save Watanuki. The price he paid for this was blood; the equivalent amount that Watanuki lost. Thus, like their eyes, Doumeki and Watanuki were linked once again – by blood this time. These two incidents helped enforce their already entwining destinies, and as a result Doumeki began to see and sense more ghosts than before – ghosts he never even felt the presence of in the beginning.
While the incidents surrounding Doumeki’s true role in Watanuki’s life remain mysterious, Yuuko gives Doumeki an egg and tells him that he should keep it on him, for “that moment.” She tells him he must not hesitate. The egg itself holds no magical energy, but it is solid and unbreakable, not even worn away by acid rain. Doumeki always keeps this egg on his person.
» Personality:
Upon first glance, Doumeki seems to have absolutely no emotion, and an utterly impassive expression. Upon second glance, it’s the same. Doumeki exhibits a very calm, passive demeanor, with very little change in his expression. However, he does possess a very flat, deadpan kind of sarcasm, and while he doesn’t seem to derive amusement out of it, he often provokes Watanuki in such a way that it’s impossible not to determine it’s purposeful. He also gets annoyed every time Watanuki shouts at him (which is pretty much every time Watanuki speaks to him), and will plug his ears and tell the boy to shut up. While speaking to anyone else, however, Doumeki is distantly polite, and says very little. One-worded statements are Doumeki’s most common method of speaking, and he usually refers to Watanuki as “Oi,” and replies to people with “Oh” or “Hm.” If he deigns to say anything more, it usually involves information about spirits or the supernatural (taught to him by his late grandfather); or, on rare occasions, when he’s having a serious conversation with Watanuki.
Doumeki loves food, particularly Watanuki’s, and can be seen eating it or requesting it often (usually outlandish or rare foods, just to drive Watanuki batshit crazy). However, Doumeki really is picky, and his constant requests for Watanuki’s cooking are because Doumeki only eats food he’s “satisfied” with – food in which he can feel something about the person who made it (their aura or personality, perhaps). If he can’t sense this, or does not like what he senses, he will not touch the food. Thus, when he finds what he really likes, he’s a total glutton. He also enjoys archery, and is in many competitions – being one of the top competitors on his team. He also collects stamps.
Doumeki is very observant, and often catches things Watanuki himself never thought of. He’s aware of Himawari’s secret (that she brings bad luck to all around her due to a curse) while Watanuki is still clueless, and he keenly notices that Yuuko doesn’t let him come to her shop during the Hyakki Yako (demon parade) arc when Yuuko chooses instead to show up at the park to drink the nectar with them. He also accepts Watanuki’s gift of being able to see and draw spirits to him without question, and is unfazed by anything to do with the occult (most likely because of his grandfather’s influence) or otherwise, being stable and calm in all anxiety or fear-provoking situations. Furthermore, he seems to know a lot about the complexity of Watanuki’s existence, though this is only hinted at and it is unknown how much he really does know, as he never speaks about it.
Despite provoking Watanuki often (popping up when Watanuki least wants it [usually when he’s with Himawari], telling him to make him food, and calling him many forms of the word ‘idiot’), Doumeki is very protective of Watanuki, and keeps an eye on him. Any time he senses something bad might happen, Doumeki hangs around Watanuki or follows him, whether Watanuki likes it or not. Doumeki has saved Watanuki and protected him many times throughout the series, and he is asked both outright and subtly by Yuuko and Kohane to watch over Watanuki and look out for him, a duty he takes very seriously. And while he seems most watchful of Watanuki, Doumeki’s very altruistic, and his kindness extends to everyone around him, should they need his aid.
» Appearance:
Doumeki is quite tall, with close-cropped dark hair and an impassive expression that usually looks strangely like a scowl due to slanted, thin eyebrows. His eyes are also usually hooded, making him look half-asleep. He’s slim but decidedly strong due to being a popular athlete at his school. He came to Atia dressed in his school uniform, which consists of black slacks and jacket over a white button-down shirt.
